What the Numbers Actually Show

Across the Hollywood area between 2019 and 2025 there were roughly 6,315 reported collisions. About 4,716 of them, three in every four, happened on the streets the city had already identified as its most dangerous.

Within that total: 762 involved a pedestrian, of which 210 caused death or serious injury and 29 killed the person on foot. 366 involved a motorcycle, 116 of those seriously. 260 involved a bicycle. And 2,631, well over a third of everything, were hit and run.

One caution about any figure you see for recent years. Reported collision counts across Los Angeles drop sharply after 2020, and that is a records system changeover rather than a safety improvement. The dataset itself carries a note that it is no longer updated. Anyone showing you a falling trend line from that data is showing you an artifact.

Which Deadline Applies to You

Two years from the injury for an ordinary claim against a person or a business.

Six months to present a written claim if a public entity is responsible, and in Hollywood that usually means the City of Los Angeles. That claim goes to the City Clerk at 200 North Spring Street, room 395, and the city states plainly that claims for injury must be filed no later than six months after the occurrence.

Two details inside that. If the claim is worth more than ten thousand dollars you must not state a dollar amount on the form. And the deadline to sue is separate from the deadline to claim: six months from a written rejection, or two years from accrual if the city never sends one.

The Hollywood Bowl is worth a line of its own, because it is owned by Los Angeles County rather than the city. An injury there is a claim against a different public entity with its own process.

The Twenty Four Hour Rule People Miss

If the driver who hit you left and was never identified, your own uninsured motorist coverage is the claim. California attaches two conditions to that, and both are easy to fall foul of.

There has to have been physical contact. A car that forced you off the road without touching you does not qualify, however clearly it caused the crash.

And the accident must be reported within twenty four hours to the police department of the city where it happened. Hollywood is part of Los Angeles, so that is LAPD, and the Hollywood Division covers this area. A few blocks west in West Hollywood the answer changes to the Sheriff, because that is a separate city with its own force. Reporting to the wrong agency is a real way to lose a claim.

Being Partly at Fault

California reduces a recovery by your share of responsibility rather than barring it. Being found twenty percent responsible reduces the award by twenty percent.

This matters in Hollywood specifically because of the pedestrian mix. Crossing outside a marked crosswalk, stepping out between parked cars, or moving with a crowd against a signal are all facts an insurer will lead with. None of them ends a claim on its own.

Where a Case Is Heard

Hollywood matters are filed downtown at the Stanley Mosk courthouse on North Hill Street. West Hollywood, next door and a separate city, goes west to Santa Monica or Beverly Hills instead. The distinction catches people out because the two places read as one neighborhood.
